Dodge Neon Sport Coupe

The Dodge Neon Sport Coupe was among the first generation Neon models introduced in January of 1994. It was mainly sold as a 4-door sedan or a 2-door coupe with an option of either a 132 hp @ 6000 rpm and 129 ft•lbf @ 5000 rpm SAE (98 kW) 2.0 L SOHC engine or a 150 hp @ 6500 rpm and 133 ft•lbf @ 5600 rpm SAE (112 kW) 2.0 L DOHC 4-cylinder engine. The Neon sold in the United States and Canada as a Dodge and Plymouth, and in other countries outside of North America it was sold as a Chrysler. Compared to other cars being released at the same time, the Neon held relatively high horsepower with its competitors being closely matched at Civic DX's 102, Civic EX at 125, Sentra or Sunbird at 110, Escort at 127, Corolla at 115, and so on. The Neon also offered a higher torque output than its rivals. According to Robert Lutz, then-chairman of Chrysler Corporation, "There's an old saying in Detroit: 'Good, fast, or cheap. Pick any two.' We refuse to accept that." This statement can be easily justified by the Neon's overall success, being the only recent American car from its class to make a sizable profit. The performance came as no surprise in SCCA Solo autocross, where first-gen Neons were highly competitive. The ACR model was ahead of the competition with its four-wheel disc brakes, adjustable Arvin or Koni dampers, thicker anti-roll bars, fast-ratio steering, and heavy-duty front wheel hubs. '95 to '97 models additionally featured adjustable camber. Computer-controlled speed limiters were also completely removed from '95 ACR models and instead exceeded to 210 km/h (130 mph). The ACR's distinguishing factor was its bumper with fog light holes, despite fog lights not being present. Initially only being offered to SCCA members in '95, the ACR was made available to the public in the subsequent years. The car was simply known by its ordering code: "Competition Package," with the name ACR sticking as more people became familiar with the model.
