Dodge Ram 1500 with Optional HEMI Power

The third-generation Dodge Ram was unveiled in February 2001, marking many impressive updates such as an entirely new frame, suspension, powertrains, interior components, and sheet metal. The trucks were equipped with Quad Cab trucks that opened their rear doors in a conventional manner. Both the 1500 and 2500/3500 Ram trucks featured an independent front suspension on the former; however, the live axles of the latter were retained to maximize durability. This iteration was found to be highly popular, with 400,000 units sold over the course of 2001-2002 and nearly 450,000 during 2002-2003.

Although the sales skyrocketed, the Ford F-150 was able to keep up with a total of 400,543 Ram trucks sold in 2004. This was accredited to Dodge's lack of true crew cab models. In 2006, the Ram received a facelift with the addition of a "Mega Cab" with an enormous 6.25-foot cargo box and the ability to fit six people inside with rear recliners. Furthermore, new features included Bluetooth U Connect, a navigation system, SIRIUS Satellite Radio, and a rear seat DVD entertainment system with wireless headphones.

2006 Facelift

In order to keep up with the competition, the steering wheel design was changed to that of the Dodge Dakota and Dodge Durango. The SRT model that was equipped with an 8.3 L V10 engine, the same used in the Dodge Viper SRT/10, was discontinued after the 2006 model year.
