Dodge Ram Van
Built on the B platform (later AB) and marketed under the Dodge brand from 1971 to 2003, the Dodge Ram Van was a full-size van offered in both cargo and passenger versions. The Dodge Tradesman was the van's cargo model while the Dodge Sportsman was the passenger van. The Ram nameplate was adopted in 1979, replacing both previous names. Utilizing a rail-through unibody design (uniframe), the Dodge platform was lighter yet stronger than its competitors, a feature which improved the van's NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness). Although the B-series van was a unibody production, it was quite popular for cab-over motorhome conversions during the era.
All generations of the B-series van had similar construction although certain changes were made with regard to the front fenders, hood, grille, and bumpers, which followed the design of Chrysler's full-size trucks of the time. Initial production passed on the use of the separate fixed panel for the side door; this allowed easier access to the side door without the need to interfere with the front passenger seat. This panel was eliminated for the second generation model when it was introduced in 1979, shortening the wheelbase of the vehicle. Likewise, the van's parts compatibility from year to year facilitated its popularity with builders and fleets.
There was a wide selection of engines used in the rear-wheel drive Chrysler product between 1971 and 2003, ranging from the 225 in³ Slant Six to the 440 in³ V8's. The Dodge Ram Van was also included in the "Adult Toys" lineup from late 1970s, alongside the Dodge Warlock, Dodge Lil' Red Express Truck, and Dodge Ramcharger. A rebadged variant of the Dodge Sportsman called the Plymouth Voyager was made available in 1974 and lasted until 1983; the nameplate was then transferred to the new minivan for the 1984 model year.
