The 1996 Dodge Viper RT/10 is often referred to as the "generation 1.5" model, as it carried many features of the first generation while transitioning to the second. During the mid-model year, the roadster's exposed side exhaust pipes were moved to a single muffler at the rear with two large tailpipes for reduced back pressure, which increased the horsepower to 415 bhp (309 kW; 421 PS) and torque to 488 lb·ft (662 N·m). Other features included a removable hardtop, sliding glass window, and aluminum suspension components which reduced the weight by 60 lb (27 kg).

The 1997 model year saw the introduction of the GTS coupe version dubbed the "double bubble" due to its roof design. It came with a 450 hp (336 kW) 8.0 liter V-10 engine and featured a first for the Viper - airbags, as well as air conditioning and power windows/door locks. It was also announced as the pace car of the Indianapolis 500.

The 1997 and 1998 models saw minor updates for the Viper RT/10 and GTS models, respectively. The RT/10 was upgraded with the GTS engine and airbags, while the GTS received revised exhaust manifolds and camshaft. In 1998, both models were also equipped with second-generation airbags.
