EDAG LUV Concept

On March 6, 2007, EDAG Engineering + Design AG will be presenting a concept car in Geneva - the "EDAG LUV". This luxurious SUV concept car has a maritime look, from bow to stern. The hood is made of oiled teakwood, as well as the flooring on the interior and cargo area, conveying a seaman-like atmosphere. The cargo area, with seating capacity for five, is arranged like a ship's quarterdeck. The Module Concept of the "EDAG LUV" - An Economical Approach to Vehicle Derivatives However, the intriguing design of the "EDAG LUV" hides a clever module concept which allows the cost-effective transformation of vehicles into derivatives or niche vehicles. The EDAG engineering team, headed by project manager Andreas Funk, pursued the goal of using the highest possible number of carry-over parts. Their efforts achieved a remarkable share of 90% parts re-utilisation. Through careful consideration of the production concept of the basic vehicle, they managed to extend the floor pan of the car by 512 mm with original parts, while the wheelhouses, rear-end finish and the standard power-lift system from the sedan were used without any modification. Simulation models were employed to test the crash behaviour and rigidity, thus ensuring safety and quality. The clever use of identical parts makes the "EDAG LUV" concept economically attractive, providing manufacturers with the opportunity to create niche vehicles to meet customer needs. Consequently, EDAG's Head of Design, Johannes Barckmann pointed out that the advantages of the module concept make it possible to simultaneously realise visual novelty and economic success.
