Ferrari 599 GTB HY-KERS Concept
At the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, Ferrari unveiled the HY-KERS vettura laboratorio, which has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by 35% on the combined cycle (ECE + EUDC). The technology is based on the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano and could possibly be integrated into all of their future 8- and 12-cylinder models. In fact, research combined with Formula 1 experience resulted in the new technology heightening the cars' sporty character and driver involvement.
A primary objective of the project is achieving compliance with upcoming CO2 emissions standards, especially in urban driving. The layout of the Ferrari hybrid transmission makes this possible, with batteries located below the car, and an electric motor that is connected to the rear of the F1 dual-clutch gearbox. This design not only ensures emission levels meet standards, it actually improves sports car dynamics by reducing the centre of gravity. No space has been taken away from either the cockpit or the boot of the car.
The originality of the hybrid transmission goes beyond its architecture, as Maranello engineers also created an electric motor that yields up to 100 horsepower. The algorithms controlling the torque, traction, and braking functions are modelled after Ferrari's Formula 1 experience.
The HY-KERS concept is only one of the possible directions Ferrari is taking to reduce energy consumption. To decrease drag and improve tyre rolling resistance, the company is continuing to search for ways to minimize engine friction and cut down on car weight. Ferrari is also improving upon their production methods, with 30,000 less tons of CO2 emissions and 65% less Particulate Matter levels by the end of the year, all thanks to their on-site photovoltaic system and trigeneration plant. These savings equate to meeting the Kyoto protocol objectives a full 10 years early with twice the standard.
