Fiat 124 Saloon 1966 posters

Fiat 124 Saloon

The Fiat 124 is a large family car produced by the Italian manufacturer Fiat between 1966 and 1974. It replaced the Fiat 1300 and Fiat 1500 and was introduced by being dropped by parachute from a plane - which won the car that year's European Car of the Year award. Critics were impressed with the car's spacious interior, advanced coil spring rear suspension, disc brakes and lightweight construction. Power came from a 1.2 L (1197 cc) Fiat OHV straight-4, producing 65 hp (49 kW) and 70 ft.lbf (95 Nm) - and Road & Track praised the car's acceleration, comparing it with cars in the 1800-2000 cc class. The basic 124 saloon also spawned the Fiat 124 Sport Spider, and Fiat 124 Coupe, both highly sought after 1970s classic cars. A longer and more luxurious version of the 124 sedan known as the 125 was also released in 1967, alongside a few other variants. The Fiat 124 was made in various other countries, all of similar design - such as the Russian Lada ???-2101 / Zhiguli (later Lada Riva), the Indian Premier 118NE, the Spanish SEAT 124, the Bulgarian Pirin-Fiat and the Turkish Murat 124. Despite its innovative technology, and many successful production versions, very few Fiat 124 sedans have survived, largely due to its connections with the outdated Lada. For all its popularity, the Fiat 124 ceased production in 1974 and was replaced by the Fiat 131 Mirafiori. The production of the Fiat 124 Spider by Fiat and Pininfarina, however, continued until 1985 and its variants have been produced to this day.
