Fiat 125 Special 1970 posters

Fiat 125 Special

The Fiat 125 Special was introduced by Fiat in 1968 as an addition to the Fiat 125 family car range. The chassis was based on the Fiat 1300/1500, and the body was an extended version of the Fiat 124. The key change was a 1608 cc dohc engine producing 100 bhp, as well as a five speed gearbox, improved trim, and styling. In 1970, the Fiat 125 Special received a facelift with a range of updated features and a three-speed automatic transmission option. A high-performance variant of the Fiat 125 Special was also manufactured in New Zealand. This variant had larger valves, two twin 40DHLA carburettors, improved camshafts, and a higher compression ratio, creating around 125 bhp. Unfortunately, only 84 of these vehicles were created before Fiat headquarters intervened and stopped production. Fiat also collaborated with other car brands to create a range of variations, such as the 125GS 1.6 made by Moretti, the 125Z by Zagato, the 125 Coupé and 125 Station Wagon from Savio, the 125 Executive from Pininfarina, and the two-door Samantha coupé with pop-up headlights from Vignale. Production of the Fiat 125 in Italy ceased in 1973 when the Fiat 132 was released, with a total production of 603,877 cars. However, production by other countries, such as Argentina and Egypt, continued until 1982 and 1983 respectively. In Poland, the Fiat 125 was produced until 1991, under the Polski Fiat 125p name before being named the FSO 1300 and FSO 1500. This version was mechanically based on the Fiat 1300/1500, and differed in its exterior with the use of four round headlights. It was also available as an estate, pickup, and hatchback.
