Fiat 126
The Fiat 126 was introduced in 1972, replacing the Fiat 500. Its design followed the layout of its predecessor, utilizing many of the same mechanical components, but with a body resembling the smaller Fiat 127. Engine size increased to 700cc by the 1980s, producing 34 bhp.
While the Fiat 126 never achieved the popularity of the 500, it was still recognizable by its successful sales. A facelift in 1984 added plastic bumpers to all versions and a new dashboard, followed three years later by the installation of a watercooled engine.
Production of the 126 in Italy ended during the 1980s, though it continued to be built in Poland until 2000 as the Polski Fiat 126p. The Soviet-mandated steel rust scandal of the 1970 did affect the sales of the Fiat 126 to an extent, though other European cars suffered similar repercussions.
