Fiat 127
The Fiat 127 is a supermini that was produced by the Italian manufacturer Fiat between 1971 and 1983. It was introduced in 1971 as the replacement for the Fiat 850 and received praise for its innovative use of space, transverse engine and front wheel drive layout, and its road-holding capabilities. The 127 won the international Car of the Year award in 1972, becoming one of the best-selling cars in Europe in that time.
The Series 2 version of the 127, released in 1977, featured a restyled front and rear, a revised dashboard, larger rear glass area, and a new 1049cc engine option. A 5-door derivative soon became available in certain countries. In 1982, the Mark 3 came out with freshened front and rear styling, a new 1301cc engine option, and a redesigned, more modern interior.
SEAT released a Spanish version of the 127, known as the SEAT 127, in 1972. After their license expired, SEAT redesigned key parts of the car to create the SEAT Fura Dos, some components of which were later used in the Ibiza Mark 1. Globally, SEAT produced more than 1.5 million 127s between 1972 and 1984. The 127's underpinnings were also used in models of other Fiat-sponsored manufacturers, such as the Yugo 45 (Zastava Koral) of Yugoslavian Zastava Company and the Fiat 147 of Brazil.
Production of the 127 ended in 1983 after the introduction of its replacement, the Fiat Uno. However, like most 1970s Italian cars, the Fiat 127 was prone to severe body corrosion, particularly in Northern Europe where damp weather and salty roads had a devastating effect on its fragile bodywork. This issue, in addition to similar problems with other Italian cars from this period, severely damaged the reputation of Italian car-makers in the region, a reputation that would not fully be eliminated until the early 1990s.
