Fiat 508 Balilla Sport

The Fiat 508 Balilla was a compact car released by Fiat in 1932, with the intention of replacing the Fiat 509 - the production of which had ceased five years before. It was manufactured with a 3-speed transmission, capable of accommodating four passengers and reaching a top speed of approximately 50 mph (80 km/h). The car was sold for 10,800 lire (or 8,300 2005 euro), and around 113,000 vehicles were produced in its lifetime. The Fiat 508 Balilla was also assembled in overseas factories, such as Walter Motors a.s. in Czechoslovakia; Centralne Warsztaty Samochodowe factory in Poland; NSU-Fiat in Germany; as well as "SAFAF" (later rebranded as "Simca-Fiat") in France. Exhibiting the high qualities of a luxury car, the Fiat 508 Balilla had its public debut on 12 April 1932, at a motor show occasioned by the Fiera Milano trade fair. Initially equipped with a front-mounted four-cylinder petrol/gasoline-fueled engine of 995cc, the 508A (1932-1934) had a maximum power of 20 hp (15 kW) at 3500 rpm and a top speed of 80 km/h (50 mph). In 1933, the power increased to 24 hp (18 kW) at 3500 rpm, and the speed went up to 85 km/h (53 mph). The transmission was upgraded to a 4-speed gearbox and the “berlina” (saloon/sedan) body was modified for aerodynamics in 1934, becoming the 508B. Stopping power was ensured by drum brakes on all four wheels.
