Fiat Multipla

The Fiat Multipla is the name given to two different automobiles manufactured by Fiat, the first from 1956 to 1965, and the second from 1998 to the present.

Original Multipla (1956-1965)

The original Multipla and the 600 Multipla were built on the Fiat 600 drivetrain, featuring the model 1100 front suspension. Despite the rather small footprint, the car was able to seat up to six people. Its driver compartment was moved forward to free up space, resulting in a 'one-box' look similar to the multi-purpose vehicle (MPV). It gained popularity as a taxi in Italy right up until the 1970s.

The modern Multipla (1998-)

The 1998 model of the Multipla was based on the Brava and featured the revolutionary two-one-two seating configuration — two in the front, one in the middle, and two at the back. This made it quite unlike any other car on the market at the time. Despite its polarizing design, it even found itself displayed at the Museum of Modern Art in New York during its 'Different Roads - Automobiles for the Next Century' exhibition in 1999.

The 1.6 L petrol and 1.9 L turbo-diesel engines give the Multipla good performance and refinement. For particular markets, a "Bi-Power" Multipla was offered, which ran on both petrol and LPG. Unfortunately, the car didn't take off as Fiat had hoped due to its unique design.

Inner room and flexibility

At its launch, the new generation Multipla was praised for its flexibility. It featured adjustable front seats and rear seats that could be reconfigured and removed for maximum versatility. It boasts an impressive capacity of 430 litres of luggage space when all the seats are engaged, and this extends to 1,900 litres when the rear seats are removed.
