Fiat Multipla

Original Multipla (1956-1965)

The first-generation Fiat Multipla was released in 1956, and was based on the Fiat 600 drivetrain, model 1100 front suspension. It had a unique one-box design, and sat six people within a footprint just 50cm longer than the original Mini Cooper. Its lack of a trunk and its popularity as a taxi in Italy made it quite distinctive.

The modern Multipla (1998-)

In 1998, the second iteration of the Fiat Multipla was released. It was based on the Brava, and stood out from its competitors with its two rows of three seats and unusual exterior and interior design. Despite its initial polarizing effect, the Multipla was acknowledged by the Museum of Modern Art in New York to be a vehicle for the next century.

Initially well-received in Italy, the Fiat brand was not enough to draw buyers to the Multipla outside of Italy. A 2004 facelift to make the Multipla's styling more restrained was a step toward increasing its marketability. It was fitted with a 1.6 L petrol and 1.9 L turbo-diesel engine, providing good performance and a smooth ride and handling. The Bi-Power Multipla model was equipped to run on both petrol and LPG.

Inner room and flexibility

The new-generation Multipla was noted for its inner room and flexibility. Its three-abreast seating configuration could be adjusted, and its rear seats could be removed and relocated into numerous formats. This enabled the Multipla to offer a class-leading 430 litres of luggage space, and up to 1900 litres of flat floor load space when the rear seats were removed from the vehicle.
