Fiat Punto Natural Power

The second generation Fiat Punto, codenamed Project 188, was unveiled in late 1999 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Featuring all-new styling that still retained the original Punto's distinctive shape and design, the hatchback had its chassis and interior completely revamped with a new torsion beam rear suspension. To commemorate Fiat's centenary, the new Punto was the first to bear the iconic round Fiat badge.

An additional model was presented at the event, the Fiat Wish concept car. This was a hardtop convertible version of the Fiat Punto, similar in styling to the Peugeot 206 CC. The Wish was designed by Pininfarina to mark Fiat's 100th anniversary.

Entry level

No longer available were the 1.1 and 1.4-L turbo engines due to emissions issues. As entry-level options, customers could choose from a 1.2-L petrol engine, with either an 8 or 16-valve variant, delivering either 60 hp (45 kW) or 80 hp (60 kW) respectively, or a 1.9-L diesel unit with common rail injection and turbocharger, or a naturally-aspired unit with mechanical injection.

Sporting versions

Two sporty versions of the Punto were released -- the 1.2-L 16 valve Sporting version that achieved top speeds of around 130 mph (210 km/h) with its six-speed manual or alternatively a Speedgear CVT with a sequential manual shift mode comprising of six gears (or seven in the Sporting). The 1.8-L HGT was also offered and had the ability to reach 0-60 in 8.0 seconds. With improved handling over the Punto GT, the HGT was released in limited numbers as the a sporty variant, the "HGT Abarth", complete with deeper bumpers, rear spoiler, side skirts, new alloys and trim for the interior.
