Fiat Ritmo 1978 posters

Fiat Ritmo

When the 1978 Fiat Ritmo was launched, its distinctive design - courtesy of Bertone of Italy - made it the most eye-catching small family car in Europe. Badged as the Fiat Strada in Britain and the U.S., the Ritmo lacked the appeal to draw buyers away from the Ford Escort/Austin Allegro due to its unconventional styling. It is said that this was because "Ritmo" was a type of sanitary towels in the U.S. market.

History

In spite of its unconventional looks, the Ritmo was based on the components of the more conservative Fiat 128, which ran until 1984. Although the driving experience was considered acceptable, the steering was extremely heavy and imprecise, and the gearbox met with criticism. Offering a cheaper option than many cars in its class by Ford and Renault, the Ritmo sold mainly in its native Italy and Spain. The 1.1L (60 bhp), 1.3L (65 bhp) and 1.5L (75 bhp) petrol engines had respectable economy but their power didn't match their size, making them lacklustre. The Ritmo was further improved in 1980 with the introduction of a 1.7L diesel, and 1981 saw the creation of the first sporting version, the 105TC. Its 1.6L DOHC engine delivered an impressive 105 bhp, and the following year the Abarth 125TC was introduced with an upgraded 2.0L DOHC engine producing 125 bhp, plus improved suspension, brakes, and a reinforced ZF gearbox.
