Fiat Ritmo S 85 Cabrio Bertone

The 1978 Fiat Ritmo, stylishly designed by Italy's Bertone, was the most unique looking small family car in Europe at its launch. Marketed in the United Kingdom and the United States as the Fiat Strada, the striking design failed to attract buyers away from the popular Ford Escort and Austin Allegro models. It is said that the name was changed when it was discovered that "Ritmo" was the name of a line of feminine care products in the United States. History Behind its unconventional outer façade, the Ritmo is built off the front-wheel drive running gear which was used in Fiat's more average looking 128 until 1984. The overall ride and handling were acceptable if a bit bouncy, although the steering was considered too vague and heavy, while the gearbox got many complaints. Its economical engine - 1.1L (60 bhp), 1.3L (65 bhp) and 1.5L (75 bhp) - and lower price when compared to similar cars from Ford and Renault, couldn't attract enough buyers from outside its native countries - Italy and Spain. 1980 saw the debut of the Ritmo diesel, fitted with a 1714cc engine (55 bhp) from the 132. The following year the Ritmo Super was released, outfitted with altered engines - 75 bhp (1300) and 85 bhp (1500). In 1981 the first sporitng Ritmo, the 105TC, arrived. This model featured a 1585cc Fiat DOHC engine that produced 105 bhp. A few months later the shop released the higher-powered Ritmo Abarth 125TC with a 1995cc DOHC and 125 bhp, new gearbox, ventilated front disc brakes and adjusted suspensions.
