The Fiat Stilo (Type 192) is a small family car available in 3-door and 5-door hatchback body styles, as well as an estate version called the Stilo MultiWagon. First released in 2001 at the Bologna Motor Show, it succeeded the Fiat Bravo/Brava, while its successor, the Fiat Bravo, has been the go-to model in most markets. However, the five-door version of the Stilo has continued to be manufactured in Brazil until December 2010 when it was replaced by the Bravo.
The Stilo is outfitted with various petrol and diesel engines, the most popular being the 1242 cc DOHC 16 valve engine which is also found in the Fiat Punto and Lancia Ypsilon. This is paired with a six-speed manual gearbox and offers a power output of 80 PS (59 kW; 79 hp). There is also a 1.6 L 103 PS engine that can be implemented with a five or six-speed manual gearbox; a 1.8 L 133 PS engine combined with a five-speed manual; and a 2.4 L five-cylinder 170 PS (125 kW; 168 hp) engine combined with a Selespeed five-speed semi-automatic gearbox (similar to the one on the Alfa Romeo 147 and 156). Diesel engines range from the 8 valve 1.9 JTD unit with 80 PS (59 kW; 79 hp) to the 16 valve with 140 PS (103 kW; 138 hp) and 150 PS (110 kW; 148 hp).
The Fiat Stilo's styling, however, received mixed reviews, with some claiming it was too bland and 'German-looking', when compared to its predecessor, the Bravo/Brava. Its weight and suspension were also subject to criticism, in addition to the weak engine power of the 1.2 L petrol. Fuel economy was considered poor, particularly for its class, which was attributed to the heavy weight and the long gear ratios used for the transmission. Lastly, the Selespeed gearbox was not viewed favourably, particularly for the high-performance Abarth variant. Nevertheless, the car has been praised for its wide tires which offered high levels of grip, and its efficient brakes.
