Ford AU Falcon XR6 VCT

The Ford AU Falcon XR6 VCT was a full-size, family-style car released in September 1998 by the Ford Motor Company of Australia. It had a distinctive "New Edge" design, not seen before in the Falcon series, which was intended to attract a younger demographic. The AU Falcon was 35 kg (77 lb) lighter than its predecessor, the EL Falcon, and featured other improvements, such as an 8% better fuel consumption and 17.5% stiffer bodyshell. The AU was developed with close consideration of replacing the Falcon platform with an overseas model, such as the Taurus, Scorpio or Mazda 929. However, these ideas were disregarded due to worry about their towing capacity, interior size, and other related worries. The program's development costs totaled 700 million Australian Dollars before its launch, which was advertised with the slogan "You've come a long way baby". The AU was fitted with an independent rear suspension, which was compulsory for the XR6 VCT, XR8 and Fairmont Ghia models. Other sedan models had the suspension as an optional addition, without the limited slip differential. Despite the immense production cost and effort, sales of the AU did not live up to the EL Falcon, particularly among fleet sellers, due to negative reception of the styling and the overall decline of the large-car market.
