Ford Contour 2000 posters

Ford SVT Contour

The Ford Contour was a North American variant of the European Ford Mondeo sedan produced and sold by Ford Motor Company from 1995 through 2000. It was designed to fill the size gap between the Escort and Taurus. At launch, there were three trim levels available; the base GL, the more luxurious LX and the sporty SE. Both a 2.0L four cylinder Zetec engine, capable of producing 125hp, and a more powerful 2.5L V6 Duratec engine were offered and the only transmission available was a 5-speed manual. The platform also underpinned a Mercury vehicle known as the Mystique and the 1999 to 2002 generation of the Mercury Cougar. In 1998, Ford gave the Contour a facelift and released a special SVT version to the public. This version boasted a specially tuned and modified 2.5L V6 engine producing 195hp and was only offered with a 5-speed manual transmission. To complement the new engine, the SVT version also featured new bodywork, trim, white-faced gauges, larger wheels with high performance tires, upgraded brakes and a retuned suspension. Slowing sales in later model years caused Ford to cut back production of the Contour until finally in 2000 only the SE and the SVT versions remained. Ultimately, as demand for the mid-sized vehicle faded, Ford discontinued the Contour, ending its production after the 2000 model year. In its place, Ford introduced the Taurus SE, an affordable Taurus trim, as well as the Ford Escape. Although the Contour was relatively unpopular in terms of sales, it has since gained a cult following in the United States, the SVT versions in particular.
