Ford Crown Victoria

The Ford Crown Victoria is the current model nameplate for the rear-wheel drive full-size car produced by the Ford Motor Company in the 1950s, and then again since the 1980s. The current Crown Victoria can be seen as the latest evolution of the standard (full) sized Ford, starting with the Model T. While the Crown Victoria only has mediocre sales to the general public, it is very popular among fleets and police departments. Its twin, the Mercury Grand Marquis, is nearly never used by fleets, but is very popular with the general public. Although parts are shared with the Lincoln Town Car, almost no external sheet metal or interior parts are shared. Along with a number of upgrades in 1992, the Crown Victoria is the most common vehicle used by law enforcement in North America, followed by the Chevrolet Impala.

1998-2002

In 1998, the Crown Victoria's exterior styling, rear suspension, and ignition system were updated. The 1998-2002 "Crown Vics" were fitted with a revised 4-link rear suspension with a Watts linkage, resulting in improved road handling but reduced towing capacity. The coil-on-plug ignition design replaced spark plug wires, a system already being used on the 1996-1999 Ford Taurus SHO 3.4L V8 engine. Later, it was implemented on other users of the Modular V8, including the 1999-up Mustang GT, and many F/E-series trucks. The Crown Victoria has a 114.7" wheelbase and upgraded to the formal Mercury Grand Marquis roofline and side window styling.

Change of Canadian availability

In Canada, Ford dealerships sold the Crown Victoria as live civilians only up to 1999. Since 2000, it has only been available as a Police Interceptor for law enforcement, or as a taxi or Special Service Vehicle for commercial fleets. Civilians can still buy used 2000 and up civilian Crown Victorias occasionally from dealerships, or used Police Interceptors or Special Service Vehicles from various auctions. Differently, the Mercury Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Car, which also use the Ford Panther platform, continue to be available at Ford & Lincoln dealerships in Canada.

Rumour has it that Ford is thinking of bringing back the Crown Victoria to the Canadian civilian market, instead of the Mercury Grand Marquis. No official statement has been made, but many people consider this to make sense since Mercury brand was phased out in Canada in 1999 and despite the Grand Marquis' Mercury badging, it's officially sold as a Ford in all Canadian sales literature.
