Ford EL Falcon GT 1997 posters

Ford EL Falcon GT

The Ford EL Falcon was the final chapter of the fifth generation "E-series" architecture that began with the EA of 1988. It was in production between 1996 to 1998 and due to its popularity, Ford sold more ELs over two years than they did AUs over four years. Ford spent AU$40 million for the development of the EL. Not only did it become the only Australian-built car equipped with a standard driver's air bag but a passenger airbag was also made available as an extra cost option.

It served as a facelift of its predecessor the EF Falcon. Ford introduced a number of improvements, which ultimately resulted in the highest ever annual sales of a Falcon. Some of the visual changes were the return of the front grille for GLi and Futura models, the grille was now elliptical in shape, also in the rear is where amber indicators were fitted on the base sedan models, whereas the performance models (XR6 and XR8) saw revised quad headlights.

The EL Falcon was used largely as a police car, as well as played a dominant role in the Australian taxi industry.
