Ford EcoSport [EU]
Ford has unveiled the European version of its all-new EcoSport at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show – another addition to its SUV line-up as it undergoes a product-led transformation. Based on Ford's global B-segment platform, this compact SUV gives drivers the agility and fuel efficiency of a small family car combined with the flexibility, spaciousness, raised driving position, and go-anywhere appeal of an SUV.
The EcoSport joins the recently-launched Ford Kuga, as Ford looks to capitalize on its SUV heritage with plans to sell one million SUVs in Europe in the next six years. It also plans to bring the next generation Ford Edge, already a success in the US and other markets, to Europe.
This all-new EcoSport offers a range of efficient powertrains, including the 125PS 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine, this year's International Engine of the Year, a 110PS 1.5-litre petrol engine, and a 90PS 1.5-litre diesel engine expected to reach class-leading fuel efficiency.
"The Ford EcoSport for Europe is extremely economical, flexible, and stylish. Along with the new B-MAX compact multi-activity vehicle, the best-selling Fiesta, and the all-new Tourneo Courier, it completes a comprehensive small car line-up for Europe," said Nick FitzGerald, the chief programme engineer for EcoSport.
Developed entirely in South America, the EcoSport was originally launched in 2003, creating a brand-new segment and eventually selling over 700,000 units in the area. After the success in Brazil in September last year, it is set to drive growth in India and China where it will be introduced in 2013.
With the help of its aerodynamic silhouette, the EcoSport promises improved fuel efficiency. Its large front grille, short bonnet, and sharp front pillars give it a contemporary feel, and angular headlamps finish off the modern look.
Also, the EcoSport has Ford's SYNC, a voice-activated in-car connectivity system, with an AppLink system that allows drivers to voice-control mobile apps on the go, like Spotify. In addition, its SYNC with Emergency Assistance feature connects the vehicle to the coroner's office in the event of an accident.
The EcoSport also has a suite of driver-assistance technologies like Electronic Stability Program and Hill Launch Assist.
