Ford Escort ZX2

At the 1997 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the two-door Ford Escort ZX2 was introduced as a 1998 model year vehicle to replace the Ford Escort GT hatchback and Ford Probe. This new car was based on the second-generation North American version of the Ford Escort, which was first introduced in 1991 and received substantial updates in 1997. Even though it had the same wheelbase as the four-door Escort, the ZX2 featured a completely unique interior and exterior design. It was equipped with a 2.0-liter 16-valve Zetec engine with an output of 130 horsepower and was meant to serve as a substitute for the Escort GT. In 2000, the Escort sedan was replaced by the Ford Focus and no plans were made to create a successor for the ZX2. Nevertheless, production at Ford's Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico plant stayed on until 2003 when it was re-dubbed "ZX2". This article is licensed under the GNU Free Documentation License.
