Ford F-150 SVT Lightning
In 1999, after a five-year absence, Ford SVT released the Second Generation Ford Lightning. Powered by a 5.4 L V8 modular engine, it was capable of generating 360 Horsepower and 440 ft·lbf of torque. This was attributed to the Eaton Supercharger that was included as standard. Behind the engine connected to the 4R100 automatic transmission sat a rear end with 3.55:1 rear gears. These trucks were also equipped with special 18" wheels that held Goodyear Eagle F1 295/45ZR-18 tires. Compared to standard F-150s, the suspension on the Lightning was modified, featuring the front short-and long-arm system with coil springs and a 31 mm solid stabilizer bar along with the rear solid axle with five-leaf springs and a 23 mm solid stabilizer bar, slightly lowering the truck by half an inch in the front and two inches in the rear.
In 2001, the engine design was revised to produce 380 horsepower @ 4,750 rpm and 450 ft·lbf of torque @ 3,250 rpm. Another engine upgrade took place in 2003 when a deficiency in the heads, lack of appropriate threads for spark plugs, was addressed. On the other end of the drivetrain, the 2001 Model saw the final drive ratio shrunk to 3.73:1, while the drive shaft was enlarged to a 4.5-inch aluminum unit from the previous 3.5-inch steel unit. To increase grip, the specially developed 295/45ZR-18 Goodyear Eagle F1-GS unidirectional tires reverted to a new generation F1 GS rubber compound. With these revisions, Car and Driver magazine clocked the Lightning accelerating from zero to 60 mph in only 5.2 seconds, while the cargo capacity was raised from 800 lb. to 1,200 lb.
The Lightning was initially available in Bright Red, Black, and White before the introduction of Silver in 2000, True Blue (a dark blue) and subsequently Sonic Blue in 2002, and Dark Shadow Grey in 2003. These trucks were manufactured at Ford’s Ontario Truck Facility in Oakville, Ontario until its closure.
