Ford Focus 2003 posters

Ford Focus RS8 with Cammer Engine

The Ford Focus is a compact/small family car made by the Ford Motor Company and has been a successful model since it was first launched in Europe in 1998, and 2000 in North America. It rapidly became the United Kingdom's best-selling model, taking over the title from the Escort. In January 2005, a new version of the Focus was launched in Europe, while Americans could purchase an updated variant of the old model. The Focus even became the best-selling car in the world in 2001 and 2002.

Design and engineering

The original Focus was christened with the name CW170 as it was developed, and known as the Ford Fusion to a few Ford contractors. The roots of the vehicle's design date as far back as 1991, when a Ghia concept car was disclosed at the Geneva Motor Show. By 1995, images of the car were seen, again reiterating Ford's “new Edge” designing concept, which had been visible in the Ka (1996) and Cougar (1998).

The interior also got the same treatment – with its abundance of curves and lines, it was an unparalleled mix of the radical elements from the Ka and the typically more subdued American automotive models, like the Mk 1 Mondeo.

The new Focus also brought with it some high-quality components. Based on an entirely fresh platform, the car featured an advanced, fully-independent multi-link rear suspension (culminated “Control Blade”), which was derived from the Short-Long Arm system used in the Mk 1 Mondeo station wagon. This upgrade gave the Focus class-leading handling, comfort, and ride, while its cost was very reasonable due to its cleverly cut pressed metal techniques.
