Ford Focus Sedan

The Ford Focus Sedan of the first generation was produced from 1998 to 2004 in Europe and from 1999 to 2007 in North America. Ford first released the Focus for sale in Europe in July 1998 and in North America during 1999 for the 2000 model. It served to replace the Escort models in Europe and South Africa, as well as the Ford Laser in Asia and Australasia. Design and engineering Codenamed CW170 during its conception, the Focus had been first seen as a concept car known as the Ford Fusion, at the Geneva Motor Show in 1991. Some components of the design were already used in earlier prototypes where Ford demonstrated safety features, such as the eye-level rear lighting clusters. The sedan featured a New Edge design philosophy from Ford, which first appeared in the Ford Ka in 1996 and Ford Cougar in 1998, and had been a polarizing styling choice. Jack Telnack was responsible for the design element, executed by Claude Lobo and John Doughty from Australia. Ford had originally intended to call the new car "Ford Escort", but eventually resorted to the name "Ford Focus" during early 1998. A problem arose out of this in July 1998 when a dispute over using the name "Focus" for cars in the German market was pursued by the publishers Burda, but luckily, Ford managed to launch the car without a different name.
