Ford GT90 Concept

The Ford GT90 was unveiled in January 1995 at the Detroit Auto Show as "the world's mightiest supercar". It was claimed to have an incredible performance with a 720 hp (537 kW) quad-turbocharged V12 engine and a top speed close to 250 mph (402 km/h). Since the exhaust was so powerful it was suspected that it would potentially damage the body panels - to prevent this ceramic tiles similar to those found on the space shuttle were used. This car was a spiritual successor to the Ford GT40, taking design cues such as the doors which cut into the roofline, and was the first Ford to display the company's new "New Edge" design. The GT90 was built on a honeycomb-section aluminum monocoque, whilst the body panels were formed from carbon fiber. It was built in a matter of six months, and to construct it, borrowed components were taken from both another Ford family member and a Jaguar XJ220 - namely, the five-speed manual gearbox, the all-round double wishbone suspension, and the six-litre 48-valve V12 engine, which was capable of producing up to 720 hp (537 kW), thanks to four Garrett Systems T2 turbochargers. This engine was based on the Ford Modular engine with two V8 engines being cut down and then welded together - thus giving a 90-degree V-12, with 90.2 mm bore and 77.3 mm stroke. As the Ford CEO at the time, Jacques Nasser was very proud of the Ford GT90 and kept a model of it on his desk. The car has also been featured in many racing games such as Need for Speed II, Gran Turismo 2, Sega GT 2002, Ford Racing 2, Ford Racing 3, Ford Street Racing, Project Gotham Racing 3 and TOCA Race Driver 2.
