Ford Mondeo ST220

The Ford Mondeo Mk III made its debut in October 2000, boasting a larger frame than its predecessor while still keeping the same underlying floorpan and running gear. Its styling blended elements from both the previous Mondeo Mk I and the Ford Focus Mk I, offering a more restrained and mature look compared to the Focus, yet still less striking. For this model, Ford addressed the unsatisfactory rear legroom and sub-par diesel model of the original Mondeo by lengthening the wheelbase and introducing the new "Duratorq" diesel engine. Faced with the superior interior of the Volkswagen Passat Mk IV, Ford spared no expense in designing their Mk III to meet the higher standard set by the Passat. The rounded American style of the Mk I was abandoned in favour of a sleek, more "Germanic" design featuring superior materials for a better quality finish. Moreover, the Mondeo Mk III was equipped with Ford's "Intelligent Protection System" (IPS), combining onboard sensors to determine the best use of safety devices such as airbags in any crash situation, in addition to anti-lock brakes and electronic brake distribution. Those who required even more safety could opt for electronic stability program (ESP) as an extra feature.
