The Ford Mondeo Mk III, which was launched in October 2000, was much bigger than its predecessor and retained the Mk I's floor pan and running gear. It still featured some of the styling cues from the Focus Mk I, producing a more restrained and mature look. Ford improved on the Mondeo Mk I with increased rear legroom and the introduction of a new "Duratorq" diesel engine.
In order to match the new standards set by the Volkswagen Passat Mk IV in 1996, the Mondeo Mk III was equipped with a sophisticated 'Germanic' interior style, made with higher quality materials than anything a German manufacturer had to offer. Further attention was paid to the passive safety of the model, which was enhanced with Ford's "Intelligent Protection System" (IPS) which combines traditional airbags and curtain airbags with a network of "intelligent" sensors. Anti-lock brakes and electronic brake distribution were included in all models, with electronic stability program (ESP) available as an option.
