For 1973, the Ford Mustang came with some delicate restyling. The bumper was newly constructed with urethane and sized in keeping with NHTSA standards. The previous sportlamps were refitted to serve as turn signals as their old spot was blocked off by the new bumper. This was distinguished from the 1971 and 1972 model as the new turn signals were placed in a vertical orientation. Meanwhile, the Mach 1 and regular grilles featured completely different inserts. The Mach 1 decals were for 1973 models were revised and the 'Exterior Decor Group' allowed for the hockey stick side stripes which were used in the 1971 and 1972 models to be added on hardtops and convertibles. The obsolete Magnum 500 wheels were supplanted with forged aluminum 5-hole wheels. This 1973 version of the Mustang was the final iteration of the original pony car before it was repositioned under the Ford Pinto-based Mustang II.
