Ford Mustang

The Ford Mustang II was the second generation of the iconic pony car, manufactured between 1973 and 1978. It was introduced as a 1974 model year, debuting in September 1973 amidst the 1973 oil crisis. For the 1974 model year, the Mustang II came in both coupe and hatchback versions, and was based on the Ford Pinto subcompact platform, as opposed to its preceding generation which was based on the Ford Falcon compact platform.

Background

The Mustang II was introduced in response to a decrease in sales of the original Ford Mustang due to its growing size. Market feedback showed customers wanted a smaller car that was still stylish and sporty, hence leading to the introduction of the Mustang II which was much more true to the spirit of the original Mustang than its predecessor. The Mustang II was designed by Dick Nesbitt in 1971 and based on the Pinto, with Ford President Lee Iacocca ordering its development shortly afterward. The Mustang II sported a size and concept closer to the original pony car and was an instant success.
