Ford Mustang 1978 posters

Ford Mustang II King Cobra

The Ford Mustang II was the second generation of Ford Mustang, a pony car that was manufactured from 1973 to 1978. Its introduction in September 1973 was timely as it coincided with the 1973 oil crisis. Unlike its predecessor, the Mustang II had no shared components and was based on the subcompact-sized Ford Pinto. Background The first-generation Mustangs had become larger since its debut in 1964. As consumer tastes shifted toward more fuel-efficient and lower-priced compacts such as Ford Maverick, the Mustang's status as a pony car was in jeopardy. In order to preserve the Mustang's spirit, Ford president Lee Iacocca ordered the development of a downsized version of the Mustang, based on the Pinto. The final production design was set in 1971 and was considerably less similar to the Pinto than the original Mustang had been to the Falcon.
