The 1979 Ford Mustang model year introduced a larger Fox platform that had been developed for the Fairmont and Mercury Zephyr twins two years earlier. The increased body size led to more interior and trunk space, as well as a larger engine compartment. A coupe and hatchback were the available body types, and the only trim higher than the base was the Ghia. A Cobra option was available on the base model that featured black lower side paint, colored stripes on the body moldings and bumper grooves, a snake hood decal, and lettering on the doors. For the first time, power door locks and speed control were offered as optional features in addition to the power windows and tilt steering wheel that had been available since 1973. Engines included an 88 horsepower 2.3L Pinto I4, a 109 hp 2.8L Cologne V6, and a 140 hp 5.0L Windsor V8. After supply of the V6 ran short, it was substituted late in the 1979 model year with the 3.3L straight-six rated at 85 horsepower. Additionally, a new 132 hp 2.3L turbo four-cylinder was offered as an alternative to the 5.0L V8, intended to mark a new chapter of Mustang performance. Both the turbo-four and V8 were available with the TRX handling suspension that included Michelin 390 mm tires and special wheels.
