Ford Mustang

For 1979, an all-new Mustang made its way to dealerships, marking a major shift away from the smaller compact Mustangs of the past. Bigger and based on the "Fox" platform, the new Mustang had an improved interior with the capacity to seat four comfortably, a substantially larger trunk, and a bigger engine bay for better serviceability. The 2.3 liter four cylinder was retained from the earlier model, with four variations available, including a turbo, and was further enhanced with fuel injection after 1987. Alongside this engine, Ford's 200cid inline six and 3.8 liter (232 cid) "Essex" V6 were also offered. But fans of power were drawn to the 302cid (5.0 liter) V8 that became available from 1980 to 1982. With this engine, the Mustang was faster than the new-for-1982 Camaro which didn’t even have a convertible until the late eighties. The LX package offered the best performance for this Mustang, though the GT package was advertised as the fastest due to its flashy additions. In response to the 1982 Chrysler convertibles, the Mustang added a convertible for 1983. To give the car a more contemporary look in 1987, Ford applied styling elements from the rare SVO Mustang that had been offered in 1984 and the “Indy 500” Pace Car edition from 1979. This Mustang has the longest platform run of any other Mustang on the market.
