Ford Mustang

The 1979 Mustang marked a departure from its smaller, compact predecessors with a larger, "Fox" platform-based car. Its interior was fully revamped, allowing for four people to fit comfortably - even with the smaller back seat of a sports car - while also providing more trunk space and a bigger engine bay for easier serviceability. A variety of engines were available, including the 2.3L four-cylinder that was carried over but refined, and offered up to four versions, including a turbo option. Fuel injection was added after 1987. Ford's 200cid inline-six and 3.8L (232 cid) "Essex" V6 were also offered, the latter being discontinued in 1987 before eventually returning to the next-gen Mustang in 1994. The 255cid V8 powered Mustangs between 1980 and 1982; however, the 302cid (5.0L) V8 came to define the 1979 Mustang and was far more prevalent, being used to beat out the 1982 Camaro in terms of overall speed. An LX package was available to give drivers optimal performance, though the GT package - with its fender flares, spoilers, and bodyside moldings - was marketed as the fastest model due to its added weight. A rare SVO Mustang arrived in 1984, followed by a 1979 pace car edition, both of which remain sought-after today. Finally, 1987 Mustangs received a new and very 'Aero'-looking design, while also achieving the longest lasting platform to date.
