Ford Mustang
For 1979, an all-new Mustang arrived at dealerships with a larger body based on the "Fox" platform. This set it apart from the previous, smaller, compact Mustangs. It was much more spacious inside, providing seating for four, while still having a smaller back seat suited to a sports car. The engine bay was bigger and more serviceable too, offering greater trunk capacity. The 2.3-litre four-cylinder model from before was continued, with refined versions. In some cases it was made turbocharged and powered by fuel injection after 1987. Additionally, the 200-cid in-line six was common, while the 3.8-litre (232 cid) "Essex" V6 was used, but discontinued before being reintroduced with the new generation Mustang in 1994. Another option was the 255-cid V8 available from 1980-82, with the more predominant 302-cid (5.0-litre) V8 providing even better performance. This Mustang was faster than even the special 1982 Camaro and featured an LX package for an economical cost. In 1983, Mustang also added a convertible, beating the Camaro to the table by several years. The performance-based GT package, with fender flares, spoilers and bodyside moldings, was often billed the fastest, but the extra weight caused by the features made the LX the real performer. In 1984, a rare SVO Mustang came out which previewed later styling of the lineup, and a 1979 "Indy 500" pace car edition was offered. These versions are now sought out for their rarity and command higher prices. As you can see, its design was refined in 1987, where it was given more of an "aero" look to keep up with Ford’s new styling direction. Regardless of its ever-changing innovations, the Mustang’s run on the same platform was the longest of its kind.
