In 1994, the Ford Mustang underwent its first major redesign in fifteen years and marked the introduction of what would later be known as the SN-95 platform. The reintroduction of classic Mustang styling by designer Patrick Schiavone revived the brand’s popularity. The base Mustang was powered by a 3.8-litre V6 engine producing 145 horsepower (108 kW) while the GT had a “5.0” 4.9-litre V8 with an improved intake manifold and 60mm throttle body rated at 215 horsepower. The successful Cobra model returned with an even stronger 5.0-litre V8 GT-40 powerplant now rated at 240 horsepower (179 kW). This special model was selected as the Pace Car for the Indianapolis 500, making it the third Mustang to receive such an honour. A thousand replicas were produced and sold through select dealers. Upgraded brakes, transmission, and suspension only added to the car’s appeal. In recognition of the Mustang’s design, it was then honoured by Motor Trend magazine as Car of the Year for the third time in 1994. For 1996, Mustang enthusiasts were expecting the return of the 5.8-litre (351 in³) V8, instead they got a 4.6-litre SOHC Modular V8 rated at 215 horsepower (160 kW). Composed of two valves per cylinder, the engine lacked a revving power past 5000 rpm. On the Cobra version, a 305-horsepower (227 kW) dual overhead cam configuration was put in place for a more impressive engine. The aluminum block was cast by Teksid of Italy and featured split ports and large valves. The Cobra also included an intake manifold with dual runners to boost low-end power and response. The 3.8-litre V6 was rating was boosted to 150 horsepower (112 kW) for 1996. Comparing the V6 and V8 engine bays, many considered the V6 to be more aesthetically pleasing as the V8 engine bays were uninspiring. 1998 saw the SOHC 4.6-litre V8 upgraded to 225 horsepower (168 kW) with a more aggressive computer and larger exhaust tail pipes. This was also the last year of the “Round Body Mustang” and the only year where the “Sports” package was offered. It included a unique black stripe on the hood and wheel wells which were based on the car’s colour.
