Ford Mustang 428 Cobra Jet

The 1967 model year Mustang was the first redesign of the original model. It was equipped with a bigger V8 engine, increased size, interior and cargo space. Exterior trim changes featured concave taillights, side scoop and chrome side ornamentation as well as square rear-view mirrors and usual yearly wheel and gas cap changes. The high-performance 289 option was replaced in the mid-1968 model year with the optional 428 cu in (7.0 L) Cobra Jet engine, officially rated at 335 hp (250 kW; 340 PS). Weber carburetors were an optional extra for this engine in some markets. All the Mustangs that featured this engine are coded as R in their VIN#'s. The 1967 Deluxe Interior was modernized with special color options, brushed aluminum or woodgrain dash trim, seat buttons and special door panels. Hardtops came with upholstered quarter trim panels and chrome quarter trim caps while the 1968 models came with everything painted to match the interior. In 1968, integrated air-conditioning into the dash, upgraded speakers and stereo options, and unique center and overhead consoles were offered. Fastback models offered the option of a rear fold-down seat while the convertible featured folding glass windows. Concerning safety, in the mid-1968 model year, two-spoke energy-absorbing steering wheels along with newly introduced shoulder belts were included. Other changes were front and rear side markers, "FORD" lettering removed from hood, rearview mirror moved from frame to windshield, and a 302 cu in (4.9 L) V8 engine was now available, with C-Stripe graphics added for 1968. The California Special Mustang, or GT/CS, was based on the Shelby model and was only sold in Western states. Its sister, the 'High Country Special', was available in fastback, convertible configurations for the 1966 and 1967 model years, and as a coupe for 1968. Notably, the 1968 Ford Mustang GT Fastback achieved iconic status after appearing in the famous 1968 film Bullitt, starring Steve McQueen, of which only one of the two vehicles used in the filming of the movie is still known to exist.
