Ford Mustang Boss 351

The 1971 Mustang, introduced in September 1970, was given the go-ahead by the new president of Ford, Semon "Bunkie" Knudsen, who was formerly employed at General Motors. This updated model was wider by 3 inches to allow the bigger Ford 429 cu in (7.0 L) V8 to fit in without requiring a lot of redesigning of the suspension system.

Hardtop

The new '71 hardtop was well-known for its "tunnelback" rear window design with smooth rear pillars. Those with "Grande" trim had an added vinyl roof and Grande emblems affixed on the C-pillars. The Spring Special optional edition was offered in March and May of 1971, giving the hardtop the styling of the Mach 1, including stripes, two-tone paint, urethane bumper, and a honeycomb grill with sport lamps.

Sportsroof

Sportsroof models were available in base style and the Mach 1 and Boss 351 performance editions. The Mach 1s could be chosen with two-tone paint, stripes, optional NACA (NASA) hood scoops (functioning with the Ram Air order), side mirrors matching the exterior color, and more sports/performance features. All Mach 1s came with urethane front bumpers and a different grille including sportlights.

The Boss 351, with its similar exterior look to the Mach 1, sported a black-out hood, front and rear spoilers, no rear valance cutouts, and chrome bumpers, along with the sportlight grille.

Convertible

The convertible Mustang was powered with a power top and a glass rear window. This was the last convertible Mustang until the 1982 model. Sadly, the 1973 models had no unique exterior design of their own.
