Ford Mustang Cobra II

The Ford Mustang Cobra II arrived to showrooms in September 1973 as a coupe and hatchback. The second-generation Mustang was designed for the 1974 model year, and experienced a major downsizing in comparison to its predecessor. It was developed in response to the 1973 oil crisis and shared many components with the subcompact-sized Ford Pinto.

Background

The initial Mustangs had grown in size between its debut and the 1973 model, becoming noticeably bulky and particularly far from its original concept and size. Unfortunately, growing sales of smaller, fuel-efficient compacts such as Ford’s own Maverick, had taken the focus away from the Mustang. In response to this shift in the new car market, Lee Iacocca, who was Ford Motor Company's president at the time, ordered the development of a smaller Mustang for the 1974 model year.

The Mustang II was based on the subcompact Ford Pinto, but was far less reliant on the Pinto than the first Mustang had been on the Falcon. Upon beginning production in 1971, Dick Nesbitt, was responsible for producing the Mustang II's final design. This downsizing of the Mustang was due to overwhelming customer demand for smaller, more economical cars.
