Ford Mustang Cobra Jet Twin-Turbo Concept

The Ford Racing Mustang Cobra Jet Concept revealed at the 2012 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show shows that there is an alternative to displacement. Ford Racing has equipped its factory-built turn-key drag racer for the first time with a turbocharged engine, leveraging the same technology used in the acclaimed EcoBoost engines. Winning Heritage When the original Mustang Cobra Jet dragsters emerged from the Mustang factory in 1968, they were propelled down the course by 7.0-liter V8s with giant four-barrel carburetors. Jesse Kershaw, Ford drag racing competition manager, remembers that "When a new group of Cobra Jets came out after four decades, they had immediate success with a modern, fuel-injected 5.4-liter V8 topped with a belt-driven supercharger. Over the last four years, the Cobra Jet has become a fan and opponents favorite, the most successful late-model vehicle in drag racing." "Racing pre-dates Ford Motor Company," says Jamie Allison, Director of Ford Racing Technologies. "Henry Ford himself raced the 999 and won in 1901 to generate interest for the new company. We haven't slowed down since then. We have competed in nearly every type of auto racing, from deserts and road courses to ovals and drag strips for over 111 years, often using vehicles based on our production models, such as the Mustang."
