For 1994, Ford revamped the Mustang's design for the first time in 15 years, giving it the code name "SN-95". Based on the classic "Fox" platform, the redesign featured modern styling combined with throwbacks to earlier Mustangs. It was also rear-wheel drive, and its popularity was quickly restored. The base model featured a 3.8 L V6 engine with 145 hp (108 kW) and the GT model had a now-modernized 5.0L V8 with 215 horsepower. The successful Cobra model returned with a 5.0L GT-40 engine now rated at 240 hp (179 kW), an impressive upgrade from the original. In 1996, the Mustang was also chosen as the Indianapolis 500 Pace Car, with 1,000 replicas produced and sold. The Mustang again switched up its engine lineup in 1996 with the introduction of a 4.6 L SOHC "Modular" V8 engine, rated at 215 hp (160 kW). It had two valves per cylinder and was part of Ford's plan to "modernize" its catalogue. The Cobra model was also updated with a 305 hp (227 kW) 4.6L V8, using a Teksid-cast aluminum, cross-bolted block, and twin overhead cams for high-revving performance. The 3.8L V6 also got a boost to 150 hp (112 kW) that year. In 1998, the 4.6L V8 was increased to 225 hp (168 kW) with the help of a more aggressive computer and bigger pipes. This was the last year of the "Round Body Mustang" and also the only year that the "Sports" package was offered. Included in the package was a unique black hood stripe that ran the wheel wells.
