In 1994, the Mustang was redesigned after 15 years, and was still based on the "Fox" platform but now had more classic aspects from Mustang styles of the past. The 3.8L V6 base model was among the engine options available with a rating of 145 hp, and the GT had the 5.0L V8 with a rating of 215 hp. The Mustang Cobra also came equipped with the 4.9L V8, nicknamed the GT-40, and produced 240 hp. A classic touch was added when the Mustang Cobra convertible was chosen as the 1994 Indianapolis 500 Pace Car, enough replicas were produced for sale. Brakes, transmissions, and suspension modifications were made. Motor Trend magazine honored the Mustang by awarding it as the Car of the Year for the third time in 1994. In 1996,Ford changed the engine of the 5.0 GT back to the 4.6L SOHC V8, which had first been introduced in the Lincoln models. The SOHC engine had two valves per cylinder, creating a total of 215 hp and 160 kW. Meanwhile, the Cobra version received an upgrade with a 305 hp, 227 kW dual overhead cam configuration. The aluminum, cross-bolted block featured split ports and large valves. Additionally, the intake manifold was designed with dual runners and secondaries that didn’t activate until around 3000 rpm, giving it great low speed response. The V6 base rating was upgraded to 150 hp, and in 1998, the SOHC 4.6L V8 increased to 225 hp with an aggressive computer and larger exhaust tail pipes. This was the only year that the “Sports” package was available with a black stripe on the hood and wheel wells. 1998 was the last for the “Round Body Mustang.”
