Ford Mustang Convertible

For 1994, the Mustang underwent a major redesign after being virtually unchanged for 15 years. The new style However, code named "SN-95" by Ford, retained the "Fox" platform but incorporated some signature elements of earlier Mustangs. The base model carried a 3.8 L V6 engine rated at 145 hp (108 kW), while the GT featured the 4.9 L "5.0" V8 with a 5.0L Thunderbird intake manifold, a larger 60mm throttle body, and a boosted 215 horsepower. Alongside the return of the popular Cobra model, equipped with the GT-40 backed 5.0 L engine now rated at 240 hp (179 kW), came an extra 70mm throttle body for the extra 5 horsepower. The Mustang Cobra convertible even garnered the honor of being the Pace Car for the Indianapolis 500, its third time, and 1,000 replicas were produced and sold. Larger brakes, a revised transmission, and improved suspension followed. It was named Motor Trend magazine's Car of the Year in 1994.

In 1996, Mustang fans anticipated the return of the 5.8 L (351 in³) V8; however, this did not come to fruition. The 5.0 GT was replaced by a 4.6 L SOHC "Modular" V8 engine, producing 215 hp (160 kW). The engine already existed in Lincoln models and was part of Ford's plan to "modernize" their engine lineup, featuring two-valve-per-cylinder, one for intake and one for exhaust. Although the engine was SOHC, it wasn't as effective in revving and had less power above 5000 rpm. The Cobra received an update with a 305 hp (227 kW) dual overhead cam 4.6 L V8 block, cast by an Italian company called Teksid. The heads had split ports and larger valves, though they were a bit too much for the streets. SVT responded by putting an intake with dual runners on the Cobra, the secondaries opened around 3000 rpm, therefore making the early modular Cobras responsive even at lower speeds. The 3.8 L V6 was revised, producing 150 hp (112 kW). In 1998, the SOHC 4.6 L V8 power was improved to 225 hp (168 kW) through a more powerful computer and larger exhaust tailpipes. 1998 was also the only year the "Sports" package was available, featuring a black stripe on the hood and wheel wells regardless of car color. This year was the last of the "Round Body Mustang."
