For 1967, Ford Motor Company introduced a high-performance version of its iconic Mustang: the GT500. The vehicle featured a "Ford Cobra" V8 (FE Series 428 cu.in.) engine with two four-barrel carburetors on top of a mid-rise aluminum intake manifold. Unfortunately, the plans to release a convertible version mid-production were shelved due to various issues.

The model year 1967 is also notable for its limited-edition vehicles, such as 'GT350' with a K-Code High Performance 289 engine and 'Little Red', the only Shelby GT coupe. The GT500 was also updated with a 427 FE GT40 racing engine and capable of producing 650 horsepower, known as the "Super Snake": however, the single prototype wasn't mass-produced due to lacking of interest.

In 1968, both models were now marketed as the Shelby Cobra GT 350 and the Shelby Cobra GT 500. The solid lifter K-code engine was replaced by Ford for Shelby's use of a hydraulically-lifted 230hp 302 engine which produced 250 HP with the high rise intake. More notably, starting in April 1968, Ford installed a version of its 428 engine known as the "Cobra Jet", marked the GT 500 as The GT 500-KR or the "King of the Road" with its underrated 335 horsepower (250 kW) and 440 foot-pounds of torque at 3400 RPM. Shelby added die-cast aluminum valve covers with "Cobra Lemans" to represent the triumph of the FE engine family over Ferrari at Le Mans in 1966 and 1967.
