For 1979, a newer, and larger Mustang based on the "Fox" platform arrived at dealerships. Its interior was fully revamped, with seats that could comfortably fit four people, even with the backseat being sports car-sized. It also had more trunk space and a bigger engine bay to suit better servicing. The earlier Mustang's 2.3 liter four cylinder, available in four variations, including a turbo, was still being used after being refined, and it was given fuel injection after 1987. The 200cid inline six was also frequently used due to its maintainability and the 3.8 liter "Essex" V6 was added before being discontinued in 1987, then coming back in the new Mustang of 1994.

The 5.0 liter V8 302cid was the main source of V8 power, giving Mustang fans an even more powerful option than the '82 Camaro. Mustang then included a convertible in '83 which was not yet available on the Camaro. For those interested in performance, the LX package was the way to go as it was the fastest, despite the GT package being more widely known due to its fender flares, spoilers and bodyside moldings. However, the added weight of these features made it slightly slower than the LX. An SVO Mustang in '84 with styling similar to the later main Mustang line was also offered, along with an "Indy 500" pace car edition. These variations usually get pricier, along with the convertibles. In 1987, Mustang got a face lift and more aerodynamic-looking design that matched Ford's style direction.

This particular Mustang has the longest range on any platform.
