For 1994, the Mustang underwent its first major redesign in 15 years. The new design, code named "SN-95" by Ford, was still based on the "Fox" platform, but featured new styling and some stylistic throwbacks to earlier Mustangs, helping to revive the popularity of the brand. The base model was outfitted with a 3.8 L V6 engine rated at 145 hp (108 kW), while the GT featured the "5.0" 4.9 L V8 with a 5.0L Thunderbird intake manifold, a larger 60mm throttle body, and was rated at 215 horsepower. The highly successful Cobra model also returned with a GT-40 5.0 L engine and a rating of 240 hp (179 kW); the extra 5 horsepower came from the installation of a 70mm throttle body. In 1996, it was chosen to be the Pace Car for the Indianapolis 500; to commemorate the accomplishment, a thousand replicas were sold at select dealers. It was given larger brakes, a different transmission, and suspension modifications for its special year. This was also the third time the Mustang had received this honor, further cementing its place in automotive history. To keep up with the latest changes to the automotive industry, Ford replaced the 5.0 GT engine with a 4.6 L SOHC "Modular" V8 engine in 1996. This engine, which had been previously used in Lincoln models, rated at 215 hp (160 kW), had two valves per cylinder, one for intake and one for exhaust, but wasn’t very rev-friendly and didn’t have much power past 5,000rpm. A high-revving dual over head cam configuration was used in the updated Cobra, which had a block cast by Teksid of Italy, split ports, and huge valves, using an intake manifold with dual runners to make up for the lack of low-end response. This model's engine was rated at 305 hp (227 kW). The 3.8 L V6 engine was also bumped to 150 hp (112 kW). Both engine bays had their aesthetically pleasing qualities, though the V8 engine bays were on the bland side in comparison with the 5.0. In 1998, the SOHC 4.6 L V8 power was increased to 225 hp (168 kW), and the 3.8 L V6 was part of the upgrade due to a more aggressive computer and larger exhaust tail pipes. This was also the last year of the "Round Body Mustang", and the only year the "Sports" package was offered, including a black stripe that extended over the hood and wheel wells, regardless of car color.
