Ford Mustang GT

For 1994, the Mustang underwent its first major redesign in 15 years. The new design, code named "SN-95" by Ford, brought dramatic stylistic changes, incorporating some throwbacks to earlier Mustangs, whilst being based on the "Fox" platform and maintaining rear-wheel drive. It was an immediate success, with the base model featuring a 3.8 L V6 engine rated at 145 hp (108 kW), but the GT variant offering significantly more power with its "5.0" 4.9 L V8, now rated at 215 horsepower. This same 5.0 L engine was also featured in the Cobra, where it had been upgraded with components from the GT-40 range and was capable of 240 hp (179 kW). To commemorate the success of this model, a limited-edition convertible Cobra was even chosen as the Pace Car for the Indianapolis 500. Modifications such as larger brakes, a different transmission, and suspension changes were also welcomed for this model year. The Mustang received appreciation for this extensive refreshment and were subsequently awarded with "Car of the Year" by Motor Trend Magazine for the third time in 1994. In 1996, the 5.0 GT engine was replaced by a 4.6 L SOHC "Modular" V8 engine with 215 hp (160 kW). Despite being SOHC, this engine had two valves per cylinder and produced decent torque, but failed to reach its power potential past 5000 rpm. In the same year, the Cobra version of this engine was revised to an impressive 305 hp (227 kW) dual overhead cam configuration. To help address the lack of low speed response due to its cylinder block, an intake manifold with dual runners was added to the Cobra. On the other hand, the base model 3.8 L V6 engine was bumped up to 150 hp (112 kW). In 1998, the SOHC 4.6 L V8 power was increased to 225 hp (168 kW), and this was also the last year for the "Round Body Mustang". A unique "Sports" package was also offered in the same year, giving the Mustang a distinct black stripe on the hood and wheel wells regardless of car colour.
