Ford and Shelby collaborated to create the powerful Shelby GT500 Mustang for the 2007 model year. During the 2005 New York International Auto Show, the GT500 was debuted with a 5.4 L Modular supercharged V8, which is included with components from the Ford GT supercar as well as the 2000 Cobra R.
The Shelby GT500 is the most powerful factory-produced Mustang ever, recording impressive performance rates compared to its rival, the Corvette Z51 package. Car & Driver achieved 12.9 seconds in the quarter-mile with the Shelby, while the Corvette clocked 12.8 seconds. However, Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords (August 2006 issue) reported even more impressive numbers, such as 12.257s and a trap speed of over 117 mph.
Transmission/Gearing/Clutch:
The Shelby features a double-disk Valeo clutch with a 215 mm diameter, along with a 2.97:1 first gear, a 3.31 rear-end ratio, and a 9.831 overall gear ratio in 1st. The 6th gear ratio is the same as the 2003, at 0.63:1.
Engine:
The Shelby GT500 runs on a 500 hp iron block 5.4 L engine with an 8.4:1 static compression ratio, along with a Ford GT steel crankshaft, Manleys connecting rods, as well as GT cams, valves, springs and ports, with a maximum power rating at 6000 rpm and redline at 6250 rpm.
Supercharger:
The engine is equipped with an Eaton M122H hybrid Roots-style supercharger, providing 9 psi of boost with an improved adiabatic efficiency of 15%, compared to the M112.
Weight:
The Coupe weighs 3920 lb (1750 kg) with a 57/43 F/R distribution, while the Convertible weighs 4040 lb (1804 kg), with the same F/R distribution.
Suspension:
Similar to the Mustang GT K-member, the Shelby boasts revised bushings, spring rates, and shock rates.
Brakes:
The Shelby GT500 is fitted with 14" front disks complemented with 4-piston Brembo calipers, while the rear is fitted with Mustang GT brakes and different pads.
Tires:
The Shelby GT500 is equipped with 285/40ZR18 rear and 255/45ZR18 front Goodyear Eagle Supercar tires.
