Ford Mustang High Country Special
The 1967 model year Mustang was the first redesign of the original, bigger version. This allowed for the installation of a big-block V8 engine, increased interior and cargo space, and featured concave taillights, side scoop, chrome (1968 model) side ornamentation, square rear-view mirrors, and yearly wheel and gas cap changes. The high-performance option included a 335 hp (250 kW; 340 PS) 390 cu in (6.4 L) FE engine from the Ford Thunderbird, with a four-barrel carburetor. This was capable of achieving quarter mile times of approximately 13 seconds and trap speeds of over 105 mph (169 km/h). For a great drag racer experience, with the mid-1968 model year there was an optional 428 cu in (7.0 L) Cobra Jet engine, officially rated at 335 hp (250 kW; 340 PS).
The 1967 Deluxe Interior was revised to better incorporate color options, brushed aluminum or woodgrain dash trim, seat buttons, special door panels, and upholstered quarter trim panels. The hardtop also included chrome quarter trim caps, and the deluxe steering wheel became optional. The 1968 interior was improved to include 3 point lap and shoulder belts and air-conditioning integrated into the dash. It also had upgraded speakers and stereo, along with unique center and overhead consoles. The fold-down seat was also available for the fastback model, and the convertible had folding glass windows.
The California Special Mustang, or GT/CS, was visually based on the Shelby and only sold in Western states, while the 'High Country Special' model was available in fastback and convertible configurations during the 1966 and 1967 model years, and as a coupe for 1968.
The 1968 Ford Mustang GT Fastback achieved iconic status when it was featured in the 1968 film Bullitt, starring Steve McQueen. Two vehicles were used in the filming of the movie and only one is still in existence today.
